Going... going... gone
After more than seven years of solid service, our old workhorse 486DX/100 webserver has finally been retired. Over that period it has proven itself an incredibly stable performer, at one stage running third on the world-wide Linux uptime list.

However, all good things must come to an end, and that 486 was no exception. The old hardware had really reached its physical limitations. The 40MB maximum RAM prevented installation of certain memory-intensive software, and towards the end of its reign the 1GB hard disc drive was hovering at 95% capacity. Not an ideal situation at all.

So it was with much regret that the 486 was retired to a safe corner of our workshop, and a more powerful unit installed in its place.

But we have not quite abandoned our "keep 'em running forever" philosophy. The replacement is almost another "golden oldie" in its own right; a Celeron 500 with 256MB of memory. That's nowhere near leading edge these days, but it's still more than capable of doing the job for the foreseeable future.

This server now runs our current flagship TripleG Linux v.6.0, which is based on the 2.4 Linux kernel. TripleG Linux continues to be derived from the time-proven Slackware Linux distribution, only we've finally made the quantum leap from Slackware 3.4 to 9.1 as the base version. The switch in focus from old to new marks the end of an era (see the changelog entry for 19 June 2004), but life goes on.

As with the 486, uptime will continue to be displayed in real time in the "uptime" box at the foot of these pages. Stay tuned!
